Thinking about Bowls

THE BIG QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

I must apologies to regular readers for my failure to meet the last C&B News deadline. I had the difficult choice of staying here to pen my copy or playing golf with my son in Turkey. Turkey just won!
Our summer bowling season is all but finished. Once again, I have just missed out on a major prize….indeed, I just missed out in reaching the second leg of most of the competitions! But I hope most members will, like me, have had great fun in taking part and will be looking forward to next year.
At the start of the season, I posed a number of questions. The first three concerned the retention of the major Club Championships. Of the three reigning champions, only Frank Millan successfully defended his Seniors title in a thrilling match with David Anderson. Congratulations, Frank, but will the curse of being praised in the C&B News strike next year?
I wondered whether any of our ‘young bloods’ would win some major prizes. It’s been rather a fallow season for our ‘younger’ members but I must congratulate Stevie Watson and Derrick Robb who along with Stevie’s dad, Jimmy, won the Men’s Triples and with Michael Haldane and Jim Wight won the Men’s Rink competitions. (OK guys I know you all think you’re ‘young bloods’ – no letters please!)
I have reported previously on my question about a Balerno BC Team (Jim Wight and Michael Haldane) reaching a cup final but I am delighted to update that by congratulating Albert Rodger and Alex Lindsay for winning the West Edinburgh Seniors Pairs competition! Well done, guys! (That’s one cup I’m looking forward to drinking from!)
I am conscious that not everyone likes to be named in these articles – especially as it might ‘jinx’ their chances next year - so for readers who are interested and for members who like me like to see their name in print may I refer you to our Club website www.balernobowlingclub.co.uk  where a full list will appear in due course.
My final question concerned whether my blood pressure would survive all the season’s excitement. It has!
And so, our focus shifts to our winter social activities. I’m looking forward to some more great cabaret nights including in particular the return at end November of pop singer and supreme entertainer Christian; to the farewell (and sold out) folk concert by The McCalmans and to our Ceilidh Disco Hogmanay Party. And I daren’t forget to mention the fun and laughter I’ll be sharing with the ‘Golden Girls (and Boys)’ during our Wednesday afternoon and Thursday Night Bingo sessions.
Life is never dull at the BBC!
