WOL Seniors 2017

Last March, I noted that we would be starting our outdoor bowling season by the time my regular reader(s?) opened the C&B News. And so it is again this year! Thankfully as I write the green is not covered in snow! And it has stood up well to the wetter conditions this winter giving us hope that with further work we shall have a good playing surface to offer our members and opponents.
A number of meetings have been held in preparation for the new season with the one where we appointed our Management Committee of principal significance. I am delighted to confirm that we have a ‘new’ President in Ron Duguid. Ron who served as President in 2000-01 brings much experience and leadership skills to take us through the challenging times ahead. Brian Buckner our new Vice President also brings much experience in a leadership role having been President of Currie Rugby Club. With Bill Stark and Bill Bramley continuing as Treasurer and Secretary respectively we have a full and strong complement of Office Bearers. Most of the Committee remain but sadly we say farewell for now to Anne Blake, Ian Hepburn and Ian McMillan with thanks for their splendid service and we welcome Dennis Rogers and Kenny Girdler.

The various sections within the Club have also been gearing up for the new season and congratulations go to Sandra Duguid on her appointment as President of the Ladies Section where she will be assisted by Morag Moffat (Secretary) and Helen Girdler (Match Secretary). For the Men, congratulations go to Kenny Girdler, Mike Haldane, Dean McNeill and Derrick Robb on their election as First 16 Skips and to Ron Duguid, Fergie McBeath, Phil Marshall and Brian Turner as the Second 16 Skips.  For the Seniors, we look forward to Fergie McBeath, Frank Millan, Brian Ronald and Paddy Welsh successfully leading their rinks in the Water of Leith League and to Ron Smith and yours truly in the West Edinburgh League.

Our social activities continue. We sang and danced with Billy West as Freddie Mercury in February. We’ll have ‘danced the night away’ to live band ‘Athens’ in March. And we’re really looking forward to 26 April when young South African buzz bomb ‘Niqqui’ performs her high energy tribute to Tina Turner. She’ll be ‘Simply the best!’ Come and join us!
Finally, I’ve had five good years of writing these little missives and I don’t want my luck to run out. So, I’ve decided that now would be an opportune time to take a sabbatical. Thank you to my regular reader(s?) for putting up with my nonsense. TTFN!
