Happy New Year to my regular reader(s?)! I need to start 2013 with an apology for my article not appearing in the December / January issue.  My article entitled ‘It’s naughty….but nice’ was dutifully sent on time to the editor’s e-mail address that I had always used. However, I hadn’t realised it was an old address and messages were no longer being redirected. So, my words ended up in cyber space! (Who said ‘That’s where they belong!’?). If that title intrigued you, a copy     is in the Club website – – along with lots of other interesting information.

For completeness let me finish the round up of our 2012 winners not previously mentioned. Congratulations to first time winners Ronnie Forfar and Hugh Gibson (4 Bowl Pairs), to Ian Hepburn and Paddy Welsh (2 Bowl Pairs) and to Hugh Watt (Handicap competition). Two teams successfully defended their titles. In winning the Triples, Robert Douglas, Allan Nicholls and Fergie McBeath became the first recipients of the new trophy kindly donated by The Balerno Burns Club ‘Let It Blaw’.

Grant Wilson, Ross Young, Bill Stark and Maxie Baigrie once again won the Rink Competition. But the exciting news that my regular reader has long awaited is that Charlie Husband and President Tom McDonald won the Computer Drawn Pairs Trophy! (Yippeee!)

Fergie, along with Tom Vallery and Simon Mackay, had earlier featured as having successfully defended the Seniors Triples Trophy for a second year. Sadly, that was to be the last trophy they would win together as the Club was rocked when news came through that Simon had passed away peacefully at home on 9th January after a short illness. Simon had been a member of our Club for almost 60 years. He was our oldest playing member and was still playing last season in his 90th year. He had been a great swimmer, a low handicap golfer and a champion bowler. I am so glad that we granted him Honorary Membership during my Presidency. Time in his company was always interesting as he was a man of strong opinions on everything, Ironically, my last conversation with him ended in laughter when he told me that another member had complained to him that he Simon was appearing in the C & B News more often than the complainant. I just wish I didn’t need to feature him again here.

All our thoughts are with Moira, his daughter, and Ian, his son, and the family at this difficult time.
Simon loved our Cabaret Nights and we’ll be thinking of him on 23 February when the spotlight falls on the 1960’s. TTFN!
